Comment: I have updated the text of this entry. It turns out I was wrong in my statement that 8.5 adds "little" for Notes client development. The new Date & Times LotusScript statements and the 4 new LotusScript methods/properties listed in the 8.5 release notes are actually documented as part of Notes 8.0. So it would seem there is im fact NO new Notes client development features that I can find in 8.5.

Comment: Note: Designer preferences provide the option to minimize these panels but this steals a fair amount of space. Closing panels manually does not result in the opening when a true Eclipse design element such as X-Pages is open.

Comment: Enumerated data types would typically be assigned to a specific class. So from that perspective I would consider them a feature of OOP.

Comment: If they are just going to wrap the old IDE:s into Esclipe, it's like selling an old car as new car just by doing some paint job. Don't go there IBM. We need a new fresh working Designer that will move Notes forward not backwards.

Comment: My understanding is that 8.5 was meant to be primarily an HTTP release plus the migration to Eclipse for Designer, but all of the things you've mentioned should be added to Designer anyway, so I'm promoting.

Comment: IMHO There is no point in shipping 8.5 without the Eclipse Editors. As others have said, if you want to fasttrack the IDE into the 21st century these editors are a MUST HAVE. I hope the plan has a chance to be revised.

Comment: The quickr Components are the primary reason to upgrade to QuickR from Quickplace (look+feel aside). Why miss out on the OS/x platform when IBM are committed to supporting windows, linux and OS/x ?

Comment: And if it's planned for 8.5.1, I recommend to delay 8.5 until these editors are ready. We will get a burst of laughter in the market when we have an Eclipse based designer which uses a Java editor from the stoneage, and a LotusScript editor without classbrowser.

One point of the whole Eclipse stuff is to attract new developers. Imagine a developer who uses Eclipse on a everyday basis opening Domino Designer the first time, trying to edit some Java stuff. Good god, he will have a good laugh, close it and go back to other development environments...

I am glad that IBM made it that we don't need to apologize for using Lotus Notes anymore.
I do not wish to keep apologizing for using Domino Designer!
